It might not add anything to the gameplay, but the 3D straight up makes Cave Story a better experience.

#CAVE STORY REVIEW FULL#

The use of 3D is masterful, as there are multiple layers of depth that make the simplistic 2D game look full of life. Still, there isn’t really anything new or unique to this version outside of some bells and whistles. A few more additions sweeten the pot, including optional widescreen graphics, customizable controls, and wonderful stereoscopic 3D backgrounds. On the eShop, Cave Story features the original version’s graphics and music, but retains all the content (including the Wind Fortress and Curly Story) of the Cave Story+ Steam release. For anyone who has any interest in 2D platformers, you should have played this if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? The game features multiple endings, branching paths, and delightful 2D platforming gameplay. The hero has a variety of guns he can wield, and you learn a lot of fun combat and traversal tricks as you progress. The game itself is comparable to seminal 2D works such as Metroid, though its story is a little more guided than that game’s. In 2011, Nicalis remade the game with 3D character models for a retail 3DS release and also released Cave Story+ on Steam, the latter of which is the basis for this new 3DS eShop release. It was beloved, and eventually Nicalis remade it for WiiWare and DSiWare in 2010. Both earlier versions of the game had their merits, but at this point, they’re just about worthless because Cave Story on the eShop is the definitive version (at least until they do some other re-release).įor the uninitiated, Cave Story was originally a freeware game made by Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya in 2004. The first was a DSiWare release of the original version of the game, and the second was the 2011 3D retail release. Death will still occur frequently, but there are plenty of save points for instant reincarnation.Cave Story, available as a 3DS eShop title, is the third version of the game to appear on Nintendo handhelds.

You’ll also want to be on the lookout for hidden rooms containing extra hearts, a little like Link’s heart containers. You’ll find more weapons along the way, like fireballs and missiles, and switching between them is as easy as pressing the L button on your Switch.

You’ll start without a weapon but soon acquire a gun, which you can level up. Like everything in this game, the gameplay is simple but has a surprising amount of depth to it. I don’t usually play games with the sound on for long, but I certainly made an exception for this one. This is a very minor niggle since it mostly feels so natural. The tunes change for each environment and maybe – just ever so slightly – border on being repetitive if you’re in one place too long. The fantastic soundtrack is extremely catchy, and the sound effects are cute – somehow it sounds retro, but in a cool new way – like an old song that’s been remastered. This isn’t a typical frog, but a giant boss frog. It’s so much fun exploring that it doesn’t feel like work – you’re just enjoying your romp through this retro and slightly kookie world. Suddenly there’s a fireplace to enter, or you’ll find the key to a locked door. The story is fun and full of humor, and unfolds neatly as you progress, with new areas opening up and new characters introduced along the way – again, in a rather subtle way. You’ll run into all kinds of creatures, from witches and robots to bats and frogs. You begin by searching for one named Sue, who used to be human. The story sees you embark on a quest in a world of bunny-like creatures called Mimiga.

There are many locations to explore, with everything from flowering gardens to creepy graveyards – I love that juxtaposition (and I’ve wanted to use that word in a review for a while now).

There are adorable bunny-like creatures with anger issues, robots who morph into other creatures, killer frogs, even weird wide-eyed statues that shoot orbs at you. Death.Įverything in this world is a little crazy, and a little backward. And see that flame thing running along the bottom of the screen? Instant. Those are giant eggs hidden behind the walls.
